Dr Paul Verrills practices full time interventional pain management and is a Director of Metro Pain Group in Melbourne, Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine and completed Masters in Pain Medicine under Professor Bogduk, at the University of Newcastle. He was awarded his International Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice and was an immediate past President of the Neuromodulation Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is also a member of the International Neuromodulation Society, Australian Pain Society, Spine Intervention Society, World Institute of Pain, The International Association for the Study of Pain, and the Spine Society of Australia.
Dr Bruce Mitchell

Dr Bruce Mitchell is a Sports and Interventional Pain Physician and a Director of Metro Pain Group.
He has an extensive sports medicine background, previously working as an AFL club doctor and was the former National President of Sports Medicine Australia. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and has completed a Masters of Pain Medicine and the International Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice. He has a special interest in the management of hip, back, pelvic and pelvic girdle pain.

Dr Neels Du Toit

Sport & Interventional Pain Proceduralist
Dr Neels Du Toit is a Sports and Interventional Pain Proceduralist and a Director of Metro Pain Group.
He has a special interest in chronic back, groin and neck pain. As well as providing pain management consultations, he performs regular diagnostic and therapeutic spinal interventions under fluoroscopy guidance. Having a keen interest in tendon pathology, he performs ultrasound guided therapeutic procedures for acute and chronic tendon conditions.
Dr Dan Bates

Dr Bates is a Sports and Exercise Physician working in the area of chronic musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain. He is the current Managing Director of Metro Pain Group and Monash House private hospital. He has published in the areas of management of neuropathic pain, neuromodulation and randomised control trials osteoarthritis. He teaches neuromodulation and interventional pain techniques both nationally and internationally.
Dr Guy Buchanan

Dr Buchanan is a Partner of Metro Pain Group with 20 years of specialist experience. He has Fellowships in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He also has the Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice from the World Institute of Pain which is an international recognition of excellence in interventional pain practice. Dr Buchanan's opinion is that a whole person approach delivers the best outcomes in the framework of an interdisciplinary biopsychosocial approach. Dr Buchanan uses evidence-based interventional tools (when appropriate) to make the best diagnosis of the biomedical source of pain, which then informs decision-making for guiding treatment with the aim of minimising medication usage and supporting physical and psychological reconditioning so as to restore function as much as possible.

Dr Slava Poel is a Partner at Metro Pain Group. He is an ANZCA qualified anaesthetist and holds a Masters Degree in Pain Management from the University of Sydney. Dr Poel practices pain medicine in both public and private sectors.
Dr Stephen Nutter

Dr Stephen Nutter is a specialist anaesthetist with an interest in interventional pain. He holds Fellowships from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, as well as a Membership with the Royal College of Surgeons in England.
Dr Peter Freeman

Dr Peter Freeman is a qualified anaesthetist consulting in Pain Medicine at Metro Pain Group. He received a Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FFARACS), which later became Fellow of Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA). Over time, he developed a passion for orthopaedic surgery and anaesthesia for chronic pain procedures. In December 2018, Dr Freeman retired as an anaesthetist and subsequently joined Metro Pain Group to consult in pain medicine. His other interests include golf, watching sport, travel, keeping fit, music, reading and gardening.
Dr Navid Hamedani

Dr Navid Hamedani is a Fellow of Pain Medicine. He graduated from his doctorate degree in medicine from Tehran University of Medical Science (TUMS) and continued his vocational training with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).
Navid commenced his pain medicine fellowship after seeing the profound impact of pain on the patient's quality of life, and on their family and community. He believes that chronic pain affects the whole biology, psychology and social function of the patient.
Navid currently practises medical acupuncture and mentors doctors attending acupuncture courses as a fellow of the Australian Medical Acupuncture College.
He is passionate about pain medicine and considers it the most rewarding field in medicine. By fostering strong relationships, Navid allows his patients to acknowledge and share even the most hidden impacts of their condition.
Dr Vishal Bhasin

Vishal's career in medicine started in surgery where he completed Basic Surgical Training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, including registrar positions in Neurosurgery and ENT/ Head and Neck Surgery.
He has additional experience in a variety of other surgical specialties including, plastic surgery, general surgery, urology and orthopaedics. After a hiatus from medicine, he returned to a more balanced life and decided to do vocational training in General Practice in New Zealand. In 2017, he commenced training in Pain Medicine and gained hands-on experience in both non-interventional and interventional pain management at Sir Charles Gairdner, Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley Hospitals. He completed advanced interventional training as his area of interest. Vishal is particularly interested in the integration of interventional pain management and neuromodulation into holistic patient care. He believes patients should be assessed and treated from a biopsychosocial perspective and is available for consults in English or Hindi.
Dr Simon Cohen

Dr Simon Cohen is an Adult and Paediatric Pain Specialist with an interest in paediatric pain.
Qualifying in the UK in 1995 as a paediatrician, Dr Cohen was a children's doctor for over 14 years dealing with newborn babies to young adults. With this experience, Dr Cohen has an understanding of the difficulties and challenges of looking after a child with chronic pain and how this can impact on the child and the family. By combining the latest in pain medicine knowledge and careful use of medications with a broader, holistic approach, his goal is to improve the function and quality of life of a child with chronic pain.
Dr Cohen is delighted to be associated with the Metro Pain Group who he believes will provide complementary expertise to be able to offer adults and children with pain a truly multidisciplinary approach.
Dr Gurbir Kaur

Dr Gurbir Kaur is a Specialist Pain Medicine Physician working full-time at Metro Pain Group. Her interest in chronic pain stems from close observation of the lives of people and practices around her. This inspired her interest in the multi-dimensional aspects of chronic pain. She has trained as a fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australia & New Zealand college of Anaesthetist and was employed as the Supervisor of training and Specialist consultant at Royal Hobart Hospital.
She takes an integrated approach to pain management and aims to help enhance patient confidence and their capacity in leading a productive life. Dr Kaur is particularly interested in pelvic pain and central sensitization. Her management style involves both interventional and non-interventional pain management techniques. She is available for consults in English, Hindi and Punjabi.

Dr Keys is our Brisbane branch practitioner. Dr Keys graduated from the University of Queensland with first class honours. He has worked and trained in a variety of medical specialties including General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, and Pain Medicine. He holds adjunct teaching positions at The University of Queensland (Senior Lecturer), and Bond University (Asst. Professor). Dr Keys has a special interest in what the future could bring in the field of pain medicine, in particular in the area of neuromodulation. However, he incorporates all aspects of pain medicine in his multidisciplinary practice: Pharmacological, Physical Therapy, Patient Education, Psychology and the judicious use of Procedures (diagnostic and therapeutic).
Clinical and Health Psychologist
David Field is a Clinical and Health Psychologist and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society College of Health Psychologists and a member of the Australian Pain Society. David has worked as a psychologist for the past 25 years. He has specialist training in the assessment and treatment of chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, depression, stress management, grief and relationship difficulties. David works together with the doctors at Metro Pain to help patients develop skills in pain management and reduce the impact of psychological factors that contribute to pain. By utilising cognitive behavioural and acceptance commitment therapy David enables patients to increase their awareness of the factors that intensify the pain experience and improve the quality of their life and relationships. David provides mindfulness meditation training in groups and individually to enable patients to reduce unhelpful thoughts, feelings and emotions and increase the understanding of pain and how mindfulness reduces pain and suffering.
David holds a Masters of Clinical Psychology. He has conducted qualitative research with people who have chronic pain and experience of spinal cord stimulation and has published research into help seeking behaviour.

Jo Rankin has been a physiotherapist for more than 25 years, and has gained a broad experience in both acute care and rehabilitation. Having worked in hospital and community settings, across public and private sectors, she has a good understanding of the necessary processes and services available to optimise recovery. In her role as Rehabilitation Coordinator, Jo aims to ensure that patients are linked in with health professionals in the community who will build on the care they receive here at Metro Pain Group. Jo is currently completing her Masters in Pain Management at Sydney University.

Mr Mark Teiermanis has worked over 28 years in spinal and sports medicine assessment, rehabilitation and in the management of complex musculoskeletal problems including motor accident rehabilitation and work with paraplegic and quadriplegic patients.
He divides his time between two clinics: Metro Pain Group and as a director of Brighton Spinal and Sports Group where he treats musculoskeletal injuries with a focus on spinal assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for acute and chronic pain.
His work as Physician Associate involves the triage assessment & management of acute/urgent patients ensuring they receive prompt and appropriate care including same day treatment at Monash House Private Hospital where appropriate.

Jennifer Pixley-Dawson has worked in Orthopaedics since 1999. She began in the field of Athletic Training and Rehabilitation earning a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine and later a Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies. Her career has focused on Upper Limb and General Orthopaedic Trauma.
As a Physician Associate for Metro Pain Group, Jennifer’s work involves supporting the physician in theatre, evaluating new clinic patients, triaging assessment & management of acute/urgent patients, and facilitating prompt and appropriate patient care.
